Prostate treatments have improved tremendously over the past decade. Many men are now able to recover fully from various prostate diseases with fewer side effects. The walnut-sized prostate gland may be small, but it plays a significant role in a man's reproductive system. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. The urethra is the tube though which urine is discharged from the bladder and out through the penis. The prostate gland secretes the seminal fluid in which the sperm gets its nourishment and the medium in which it travels through the penis into the outside of the man's body. When the prostate gland is inflamed due to some form of disease, it applies pressure on the urethra. This affects the flow of urine and a man who has not had prostate treatment for the underlying disease will experience pain during urination and a frequent need to urinate. Men no longer need to suffer when signs and symptoms of prostate diseases are experienced, since various forms of prostate treatment are available. The later a diagnosis is made, the fewer the prostate treatment options. Hence early detection of prostate disease is critical.

Since prostate diseases are more commonly found in men from their late forties and into their fifties, prostate tests must be included in regular medical check ups. BHP which stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a common malady experienced by many men in their fifties. The enlarged prostate disrupts the smooth flow of urine and brings on the need for frequent urination. If left unheeded by some form of prostate treatment, this may lead to other complications like renal disease, bladder damage and urinary tract infection.

Another surprising fact is that a majority of men who experience prostate problems do not show any kind of symptoms. Some of the symptoms which are experienced are frequent urination, troublesome starting and stopping urine, blood in urine, dribbling or leaking of urine and even the discomfort in not knowing if the bladder is empty or not. A doctor will be able to suggest suitable prostate treatments for speedy recovery from the affliction.

Possible Prostate Treatments

There are several factors which affect the decision for choosing one prostate treatment over another. There are two main groups: surgical or non surgical. The factors that a doctor will consider before making a recommendation include defects in relation to the prostate enlargement and the inflammation level. Thermotherapy is considered to be most commonly opted non-surgical prostate treatment for enlarged prostate in the earlier stages of the disease. In this treatment, the tissues of the enlarged prostate are 'blasted' with the help of various forms of energy. Before recommending any surgical procedures your doctor may prescribe medications that you can take to reduce the prostate's enlargement. The only downside with the medication option is that it needs to be taken everyday and forever. Many patients may opt for surgery as the prostate treatment instead due to various problems associated with medications such as the cost and side-effects such as vertigo, impotence, fatigue, headache and others.

Surgical prostate treatments are preferred if the swelling does not react towards any kind of non-invasive treatments. Surgical prostate treatments also come with certain risks even though it is costly. The risks associated are erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation and even blood transfusion. There are two significant prostate surgical treatments which are employed these days. They include laser surgery and transurethral resection of the prostate also known as TURP.

Both are effective in their own ways, but in the case of TURP the patient needs to be hospitalized for two to three days and will restricted in his activities for several weeks. Due to this reason, laser surgery is commonly used for prostate treatment as it needs just a day of hospitalization.
