The Prostate Specific Antigen Test

The prostate specific antigen test is considered to be pretty important for a man over the age of forty. It is similar to the importance of the PAP smear test for women after the age of thirty. The prostate specific antigen test is significant and it also plays a major role in maintaining a man's health. Protease is the substance which the prostate gland secretes and is the key compound detected during a PSA. The presence of prostate cancer or benign prostate hyperplasia can be detected by the increased levels of PSA in the blood. This is pretty important as the test gives valuable information regarding the early diagnosis of cancer. In this test, there are chances for low levels to be shown in the blood. In such cases an additional test known as the monoclonal antibody technique may be required. This enables the measurement of the entire PSA which is present in the blood. The sum total of the test states above is the total amount of PSA present in the blood. The possibilities of cancer could be ruled out if the levels are about 4.5ng/ml or lower, otherwise a biopsy is necessary.

Alternatives to the Prostate Specific Antigen Test

There are two purposes of the prostate specific antigen test. Firstly, to reveal the presence of cancer shown diagnostically and secondly, show the response of it to the treatment. Several other diseases may be present and are related to the levels of the prostate antigen. They include prostate infection and prostatic hypertrophy which is also known as the enlargement of the prostate gland. Due to the severity of prostate diseases the prostate specific antigen test is offered free of cost in a majority of hospitals.

The drugs which are taken include herbal as well as others that have a great chance in increasing the amount of this protein in the prostate specific antigen test. If you have been taking any drugs in the three main classes - Allopathic, Ayurvedic or homeopathy, be sure to inform your doctor with sufficient details. It should include the duration of drug use, the intended purpose and related queries. This is important as the prostate specific antigen test would be hindered in many cases due to these drugs.

Elevated levels of prostate antigen would be seen due to the presence of drugs or traces in the blood. The problem arises as the result of the test would show a negative effect even if the cancer has started to develop. This is sure to mislead doctors in their discovery of the real outcome of the disease. Therefore, the prostate antigen test has to be done only if the doctor is sure that nothing would probably interfere with the readings in relation to the test.
