The Need For A Prostate Examination

Men above the age of fifty should undergo a prostate examination as they are prone to prostate disorders. Prostate examination is a simple procedure and its results can be obtained very quickly. A prostate examination in time can detect any prostate disorders like prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. The prostate examination includes a physical check by a doctor of the prostate gland by inserting his index finger through the rectum. Many men are squeamish about this procedure. Considering its importance, one should not avoid this examination. You should not hesitate to undergo a prostate examination if you have trouble in urinating or have a temptation to pass urine intermittently. There are also instances where one cannot pass urine at all. Some may have their sleep disrupted with the need to urine frequently at night. In cases of prostate cancer, the pain experienced is quite acute. This form of cancer can be cured completely if it is detected early enough and the cancer has not spread to the other vital organs. If not properly treated, many men also develop other bladder and urethra disorders, including the inability to ejaculate. In some cases, blood may be found in the urine.

The Prostate Examination Process

The prostate examination is conducted by a doctor by inserting his finger with a surgical glove into the rectum of the patient. The prostate examination can be conducted successfully if the patient is able to relax his rectal muscle properly so that the doctor can move his finger freely and search for the prostate gland and feel it so as to check for any abnormalities. The insertion of the finger is facilitated with a liberal application of lubricants and the procedure is not painful. The finger is inserted into the rectum in a downward position for the purpose of prostate examination. Upon completion of the prostate examination, the doctor should be able to give a medical report rather quickly. Senior citizens in their fifties should undergo a prostate examination at least once every year.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

Several procedures for prostate treatment are available for prostate cancer these days. One such treatment, hormone therapy, is used to reduce the hormone levels in the patient to reduce the swelling of the prostate gland. Lowering the levels of the hormone called androgen has a direct impact on the size of the prostate. It prompts the prostate to return to its normal size. Another course of treatment is to surgically remove the testicles which would reduce the level of hormones like testosterone and androgen. Radiation therapy is also available as a treatment option. Based on the results of your prostate examination and additional medical tests, an appropriate treatment plan can be decided in consultation with your doctor. Although the recovery from this ailment can be arduous, with recent medical advances a complete recovery from prostate illnesses can be achieved.
